Dr. Sophia Yin and her Jack Russell Terrier Jonesy

Dr. Sophia Yin (February 5, 1966 – September 28, 2014) was a veterinarian, applied animal behaviorist, author and lecturer. She was an internationally recognized pioneer in the field of animal behavior applied to pet training

Her behavior modification programs are based on the science of learning. She focused on the use of desensitization combined with classical and operant conditioning. Her approach stressed the combination of positive reinforcement, negative punishment (reward desired behaviors, remove rewards for unwanted behaviors) as well as the need to observe animals closely and be aware of how the trainer’s body language and movement affect the animal’s response.
Dr. Sophia Yin is known for combining science with practical and functional applications on a day-to-day basis.

Dr. Sophia Yin will forever be my favorite canine behaviorist and author of one of my favorites books. Her book, Perfect Puppy in 7 Days: How to Start your Puppy Off Right, is for me a reference in puppy training and I always advise my new puppy’s owners to get a copy of it.

This is an extract of this book: Chapter 4, A Foolproof Potty Training Program.
